Ao (鰲, also written 鼇) is a huge sea turtle of Chinese mythology, thought to have dwelt in the South China Sea when the world was taking shape. The Kangxi Dictionary, citing the Shuowen, defines the ao as a great turtle of the sea. While the goddess Nüwa was mending the sky after a catastrophe, she cut off the four legs of Ao and used them as props. Giles's translation of the Liezi likewise has her cut off the legs of the Ao to hold up the four corners of the heavens, and Giles calls the creature a Chinese "Atlas", a gigantic sea-turtle. The Kangxi Dictionary, quoting the Sanhuang Benji, says as well that Nüwa cut off the ao's feet to set up the four poles. A different myth says Ao is still alive in the Bohai Sea, bearing on its back the three islands of the Eight Immortals (Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou); the Yupian, quoted in the Kangxi Dictionary, speaks of a divine ao carrying Mount Penglai in the sea. Ao is thought to have shaped the later dragon-and-turtle figure Bixi in imperial Chinese sculpture. Place names containing ao are typical of the southeastern coast of China.
