The Apshait is an Egyptian monster pictured as a big flesh-eating beetle that devours corpses. Its name appears in the Book of the Dead, chapter 36. In Renouf's translation, chapter XXXVI is titled "Chapter whereby the Āpshait is kept back". The chapter text is a repelling formula in which the speaker tells the open-lipped figure to go away, names himself Chnemu, Lord of Shennu, and claims to bring the words of the gods to Rā. Renouf's note says the last word of the chapter is doubtful, and one papyrus has Nebes, a lion-headed goddess. Renouf says the insect called āpšai or āpsȧit is difficult to identify. It is certainly not a tortoise as formerly thought, but looks rather like the voracious Blatta orientalis. This differs from the description of a large flesh-eating beetle in the first source.
