Halaman Taman Nasional South Downs menyebut Ascapart tergolong kecil dibanding raksasa zamannya, hanya sekitar 30 kaki, tetapi sangat mampu menakut-nakuti desa-desa di sekitar Southampton.
In English folklore Ascapart (also Ascupart, Ascapard, Ascopard, Ascopart, Asgapard) is a legendary giant said to have been overcome by Bevis of Hampton, so huge he could carry Bevis, his wife and his horse under his arm. He was 30 feet tall, yet the smallest in his land. He lost when his club, a whole tree, was swung at Sir Bevis and stuck fast in soft ground; Bevis spared him and made him his squire. Later Ascapart betrayed Bevis and carried off his wife Josiane, and Bevis's friends killed him. He is said to lie under Bevis Mount, or his body became part of the South Downs when he fell. The giant also figures in the folklore of Hampshire and the New Forest; medieval painted panels of Sir Bevis and Ascupart hang in the Southampton Bargate Monument Gallery. The South Downs National Park page says Ascapart was small for the giants of his day, a mere 30 feet tall, yet more than capable of terrifying the villages around Southampton. Some tellers say he lived only because Josain, Bevis's wife, persuaded Bevis. Some records say he did betray Bevis and kidnapped his wife, and met his death at the hands of Bevis's supporters, his body becoming part of the Downs.
