Atla (Old Norse, 'the quarrelsome one') is the name of a giantess or troll-woman in the þulur. According to Völuspá hin skamma in Hyndluljóð she is one of the nine giant mothers of the god Heimdallr, who conceived him by Odin and bore him at the edge of the world; in Thorpe's translation those jötun maids include Gialp, Greip, Eistla, Angeia, Ulfrun, Eyrgiafa, Imd, Atla and Jarnsaxa. Atla is regarded as a water goddess and a daughter of the sea deities Ægir and Rán. With her eight sisters she forms the waves of the sea, and they helped their father, the sea giant Ægir, brew the ale for the Æsir's feasts. The names of Ægir's nine daughters vary between sources, so it seems any synonym for 'wave' could be used by the poets. In Thorpe's translation of Hyndluljod, nine Jotun maids bore the gracious god at the world's margin. The name Atla is also glossed 'The Furious One', and it appears among the jötnar listed in the Nafnaþulur. Identifying Heimdallr's nine mothers with the nine daughters of Ægir and Rán is not universally accepted, since the names of the two groups in Völuspá hin skamma do not match.
