El Cuero is an aquatic creature of Mapuche mythology later absorbed into the myths of central and southern Chile and parts of southwest Argentina. It is also called cuero del agua or cuero vivo, "live hide", and dwells in the depths of rivers and lagoons. Most sources describe it as an outstretched cowhide that envelops its prey, and many call it an octopus or cuttlefish. A mythology dictionary calls it a fabulous animal of the lagoons and rivers of southern Chile that appears as a bovine hide floating between two layers of water, and some describe it with eyes along its edges. As the Manta, it targets humans and animals entering the water, wraps around them and drags them to the bottom. The Trelquehuecuve sunbathes at the water's edge and raises a whirlpool to return to the water. In a local legend, whoever steps on it feels dizzy, is enveloped and is carried to the depths. Defeating it may require a machi's help with the thorny calafate bush, or a quisco bush lure; in one tale, Ñanco defeats it with quisco cacti tied to his arms and legs. Some suggest the myth originated from the remolino phenomenon or is connected to the manta ray. El Cuero is sometimes confused with the Guirivilo.
