Ecke is a giant of German heroic legend who appears as an opponent of Dietrich von Bern. He was spurred on, among other things, by a promise of marriage from three royal maidens to kill Dietrich. In the duel the over-eager Ecke came too close to Dietrich's horse, which kicked him to death; Ecke lost his famous sword Eckesachs to Dietrich. The name Ecke may derive from Old High German egis or Old Norse œgr, 'terrible'; ecke could also mean 'sword's edge'. Since O. Freiberg, scholars have supposed the name and figure were inferred later from the weapon name Eckesachs: to explain the name of Dietrich's sword, attested in literature by the 12th century, a former owner called Ecke was invented. In the Eckenlied, Ecke is sent by three queens to fetch Dietrich. Seburg gives him a sword and armour hardened in dragon blood so that he will not kill Dietrich. Because the armour is invincible, Dietrich is forced to stab Ecke dishonourably through a gap in it; at Ecke's request Dietrich beheads him and carries the head to Seburg. The saying 'Ecke ist an den Berner geraten' later came to mean that someone had met their match.
