In Haudenosaunee, Wendat and Seneca belief, Gaoh is a giant wind spirit. He is described as a cannibal giant who uproots trees, in the form of a solitary old man. He is subservient to the Great Spirit and Adekagagwaa. Mostly benevolent, he can turn violent and create storms. He controls the seasons and the four winds: the Bear of the north, Panther of the west, Moose of the east and Fawn of the south. In the Seneca version he is chained to a rock and the winds blow when he struggles. In an early collection of myths, Ga-oh is a wind spirit of giant proportions confined in the broad north sky. Were he free, he would tear the heavens into fragments. However violently his four winds may blow, he is not evil: he cares about the welfare of people and always obeys the Creator. A footnote gives Ga-oh as the name of the wind spirit according to Morgan. Four watchers stand at the entrance of his dwelling: Bear for the north wind, Panther for the west, Moose for the east and Fawn for the south. When Ga-oh is contented and happy, gentle, invigorating breezes fan Earth. Versions of the myths differ about his home and the winds: some place it in a sky house or in a mountain cave known as the House of Winds, and the winds are described either as guardians of his home or as locked up inside it until he receives the order from the Great Spirit.
