The Hudson River Monster, popularly "Kipsy", is a serpentine water monster reported along the Hudson River and New York Harbor since 1886. The name Kipsy is believed to come from Poughkeepsie. It was first reported in 1886 newspaper articles calling it "the sea serpent". According to an encyclopedia of American folklore, local legends tell of an ancient creature that many sailors spotted on the Hudson River, described as a shark, manatee, sea serpent, or dinosaur. Dozens of people in 1886 swore they had spotted a sea serpent about 100 feet long with a huge head, which kept rising some ten feet above the river. The same encyclopedia reports that the supposed monster turned out to be a charred timber from the steamship Daniel Drew. Many sources link Kipsy to Native American legends or to the crew of Henry Hudson, but none provide documentation. Kipsy turned up in the New York Times again in 2006, after witnesses at Chelsea Piers, in Westchester County and at Kingsland Point in Sleepy Hollow reported a manatee weighing 1,000 pounds. Every existing picture of Kipsy is a painting, since nobody has managed to photograph it. A 1989 Poughkeepsie mural by Margaret and Richard Crenson shows Kipsy as a mythical serpent, and in 2009 the artist Carla Goldberg portrayed it playing ball with one of the river goddess's heads.
