Imsety is a protector god of ancient Egyptian religion, one of the Four Sons of Horus, human-headed and guarding the liver of the deceased.
Imsety is one of the Four Sons of Horus. He has a human head, guards the liver of the deceased and is protected by the goddess Isis. Most commonly he protected the liver, although the division of organs among the four sons of Horus often varied. In the latter part of the New Kingdom Imsety is portrayed as a human, while Hapy is a baboon, Duamutef a jackal and Qebehsenuef a falcon. In chapter 148 of the Book of the Dead the four sons of Horus are matched with the four directions, and Imsety corresponds to the south. Imsety (jmstj, also Amset) is first mentioned in the Pyramid Texts in the late Old Kingdom, and in numerous sources he is stated to be a child of Horus. The Egyptologist James P. Allen translates his name as "He of the Dill", and Joshua Roberson believes he originated as a personification of this herb. His name also resembled the Egyptian word for "liver", which may be why he became linked with that organ.
