The ipilja-ipilja (ipilya) is a giant gecko of Anindilyakwa mythology in Australia, regarded as the maker of rain and thunder. His home, shared with his family of giant geckos, is the Numarika swamp where the Angoroko River meets the sea on Groote Eylandt. The geckos are brightly coloured; the ipilja-ipilja is roughly a hundred feet long, with long hair and whiskers. At the start of the monsoon he eats grass from the swamp edge and drinks much swamp water, then spews it skyward; the water forms clouds held together by the grass, and, satisfied, he roars, and the roar is thunder. Encyclopedia Mythica describes the ipilja-ipilja as the colorful gecko on Groote Eylandt who replaces the Rainbow Serpent and creates storms, thunder and the monsoon rains.
