Skeptoid menyatakan kisah Dr. Crow tanpa bukti.
In the folklore of Ohio, Michigan and Connecticut, melon heads are described as large-headed humanoids with bulbous craniums who occasionally emerge from hiding places to attack people. Different versions of the legend give them different origins. Skeptoid says the standard explanation is that they are children with hydrocephalus, and that there are no photographs, videos or empirical evidence of any kind; in its view, a child with a visibly enlarged head would be very young, probably under two, and unlikely to have survived before the 1940s. In Michigan, the melon heads are said to reside around Felt Mansion. According to one story they were children with hydrocephalus from the Junction Insane Asylum, but the Allegan County Historical Society asserts that the asylum never existed, and Skeptoid likewise says there never was a hospital or asylum in the vicinity. Skeptoid also records another variation that names a German prisoner-of-war camp called Camp Allegan, where Americans did medical experiments that caused the prisoners' heads to swell hugely. In Kirtland, Ohio, the story has orphans under Dr. Crow's watch who eventually killed him, burned the orphanage and retreated to the forests; melon heads are said to be sighted on Wisner Road. In Connecticut, one story calls them the result of inbreeding living in seclusion in the woods, while another variation calls them descendants of a Colonial-era family banished over witchcraft accusations. Skeptoid says the Dr. Crow story is without evidence.
Konteks budaya
The Skeptoid author argues the melon head stories stigmatize people with physical disfigurements as monsters, whereas younger generations should be taught compassion and acceptance. The online encyclopedia suggests that the proximity of criminal and psychiatric institutions to rural areas in Connecticut may have contributed elements to the legend.
