The Moon Lake Monster, popularly called Moonie, is a cryptid said to live in Moon Lake, high in the Uinta Mountains of Duchesne County, Utah. Less famous than the Bear Lake Monster, Moonie nonetheless has a firm place in the local lore of the High Uintas, and locals say it has been talked about for years. The legend grows out of local lore, among it stories linked to the Ute, who in the past kept away from the area because the lake was thought to be inhabited by "water spirits". These spirits were believed able to pull people beneath the surface. According to locals, the Ute would not come near the lake out of certain superstitions, though their reservation lies close by. Modern sightings usually describe a large, dark, serpent-like being leaving V-shaped wakes on the surface. In 1994 Bill Reardon, a former owner of the Moon Lake Resort, reported seeing a ripple zigzagging across the lake, while other witnesses likened it to a scaly "bumpy log" 12 to 15 feet long.
