Nemty is an Egyptian god whose worship centred on Antaeopolis in the northern part of Upper Egypt. His worship is very old: by the Second Dynasty he already had priests, and he appears on ceremonial palettes of the Naqada II and III periods. He originally appears to have been patron of the area around Badari, but because little information survives, his original function, or whether he was more than a title of Horus, is not well known. In time Nemty came to be seen as the god of ferrymen, shown as a falcon perched on a boat in allusion to Horus. In that role he took the title Nemty, which means "(one who) travels". He was also regarded as the ferryman of the afterlife who carried the souls of the dead across the river of the underworld. In the tale of the Contendings of Horus and Seth, Seth instructs Nemty not to ferry anyone resembling Isis, but Isis disguises herself as an old woman and Nemty takes her across after being paid a gold ring. Two Sixth Dynasty pharaohs bore names incorporating Nemty's. The older reading of the god's name as Anti or Anty has been shown to be incorrect by several studies.
