The Orphan Bird is a legendary bird of medieval bestiaries said to live in a fictional sea, la mer darenoise, in India. Its body combined a crane's frame with a peacock's neck, an eagle's beak and a swan's feet, and its wings were red. Its only source is the bestiary of Pierre de Beauvais. It laid its eggs in the sea: those with the best chicks floated and joined the parent, while the bad ones sank, hatched under the ocean, and their chicks lived sad and alone. The Medieval Bestiary site adds that the bird has a crest and red, white and black wings. At hatching, the good eggs rise under the mother's wings and the chicks are led to their father.
Konteks budaya
In the bestiary allegory the mother bird stands for Christ, the eggs for humankind and the chicks for their souls; at the judgment the good souls are taken to God while the bad remain in the darkness of hell.
