The underwater panther is a leading mythical water being of the Great Lakes region, especially for the Anishinaabeg. Its name, Mishipeshu, means "the Great Lynx"; it has a giant cat's head and paws, scales, and spikes down its back and tail. It lives on Michipicoten Island in Lake Superior, and for the Algonquins it ranked as the strongest underworld being. An Ojibwe dictionary glosses the word mishibizhii as a lion or panther and as an underwater panther. In these beliefs, Mishipeshu lives in the deepest parts of lakes and rivers, where it can stir up storms, rapids and currents, sink canoes and drown people, often children. It is also known as the keeper of the copper of Lake Superior and the Great Lakes region, and this water manito made gifts of copper. It is seen as opposed to the thunderbirds, masters of the powers of the air, in an eternal yet complementary conflict. Some traditions held the underwater panther to be a helpful, protective being: it was believed to shelter and feed those who fell through the ice, and to give medicinal power to shamans who accepted its guardianship. Yet more often it was viewed as a malevolent beast bringing death and misfortune, in need of placating. Taking copper was highly taboo, above all from Michipicoten Island, and as late as the 1950s the Prairie Band of Potawatomi Indians held a ceremony to calm it.
