Veles or Volos is a chthonic god of the underworld in Slavic mythology. Contemporary sources call him the cattle god, but various hypotheses give him a wider domain: wealth, the realm of the dead imagined as a pasture where souls graze, and magic, knowledge, divination and poetry. Because he watched over the line separating living and dead, he also ruled the wild, the hunt and animals. He guaranteed oaths and punished those who broke them by "turning them yellow". In treaties with Byzantium the Rus swore by Perun and by Volos, the cattle god, accepting to become yellow as gold if they failed. After his baptism Vladimir ordered the idol of Volos thrown into the Pochaiv River. One source adds that after Christianization Veles was reinterpreted as the Devil, and Saint Blasius took over his role as protector of cattle. Ivanov and Toporov reconstructed a myth of enmity between Perun and Veles: Veles as a serpent climbs the world tree, is struck by Perun's lightning, hides by changing form, and is finally killed so that what he stole falls as rain. The theory was later rejected even by Toporov himself, and the view of Veles as a dragon or serpent is no longer scholarly consensus.
