Agunua, alternatively called Hatuibwari, is the supreme serpent deity of San Cristobal Island (Makira) in the Solomon Islands. He is regarded as the preeminent deity, with all other spiritual entities considered merely aspects of his being. Holding dominion over the sea, the first coconut harvested from each tree is kept sacred in his honor. Devotees offer prayers to him seeking robust health and bountiful agricultural yields. In one missionary's account, Agunua seems almost like a supreme spirit, and the name is another name for Hatuibwari, the winged serpent. According to the men of Ngorangora, he made everything: sea, land, people, animals, thunder, lightning, rain and storms. Nearly all local figona are depicted as female snakes, while Agunua is depicted as a male one. The centre of his cult is at Haununu on the south-west coast. The first drinking nut from a coconut tree is sacred to Agunua and its milk is poured out as a libation in the sacred grove. It is also told that Agunua was thirsty and rain fell to assuage his thirst, which was the origin of rain.
