Some people believe there may be a lake monster in Windermere, the largest lake in England by length, area, and volume, like the one alleged to live in Loch Ness. In 2011 anomalous photos were taken of the supposed creature, and it has been affectionately nicknamed "Bownessie". Per NBC News the name is taken from Bowness, the local town; the French Wikipedia article calls it a tribute to its "cousin" Nessie. The French Wikipedia article describes Bownessie as resembling a sea serpent or a plesiosaur. Per NBC News, the photo taken by colleagues kayaking appears to show a multi-humped black object; Pickles, one of the photographers, likened it to an enormous dark brown snake whose humps stretched over three car lengths. Skeptics say it could be a hoax. After fresh claims by tourists in February 2011, Dr Ian Winfield of Lancaster University said no fish as large as those described could live in Windermere, and that the lake is surveyed every month with nothing of the kind ever found. According to The Telegraph, the new photograph matched Steve Burnip's 2006 description; to that date nine people had claimed to see Bownessie.
