The calygreyhound is a mythical creature of medieval heraldry used by the de Vere Earls of Oxford in the 15th and 16th centuries, and possibly unique to them. It has a wildcat's head, a deer's or antelope's body, eagle's claws on its forefeet, ox hooves, horns, a lion's hind legs and a lion's or poodle's tail; occasionally it has eagle's wings. It is said to represent speed. Unlike most heraldic monsters it makes no attempt at realism and is generally thought to be the artist's invention. A heraldry magazine article on Tudor monsters presents the calygreyhound as one of the Tudor oddities and a favourite with the de Vere family, Earls of Oxford. The article includes a drawing by Colin Cole made from the family's contemporary seal.
