Clytius (Klytios) was one of the Giants of Greek mythology who attacked the Olympian gods in the war called the Gigantomachy. According to Pseudo-Apollodorus the Giants were born of Ge (Earth) with Ouranos (Sky) as father, vast in bodily size and beyond defeat by sheer might. In the work of Pseudo-Apollodorus, Hekate got the better of Klytios with fire-brands, and a list of giants calls him a Gigante immolated by the torches of Hekate. One reading of the Apollodorus text names Hecate or Hephaestus as the one who burned him with glowing masses of iron. On the Pergamonaltar Hecate burns him with her torch, but the name of her opponent there is not secured by an inscription and the identification rests on that Apollodorus passage. The Giants were depicted as armoured hoplite warriors or as primitives clothed in animal-skins with rocks and flaming brands; in sculpture and mosaic art they usually have serpent tails. According to an oracle among the gods, the gods themselves could not destroy any of them without the help of a mortal ally. Hecate and Clytius appear together on an Athenian red-figure vase painting (C5th B.C.).
