The esprits de l'Ouest are regarded as genii (netjeri) rather than gods of Egyptian religion. They are depicted as a group of three or four black jackals that tow Rê's solar barque on its night journey, and they are also meant to protect him from evil. They are sometimes shown as birds with jackal heads. Baou Imenty is their Egyptian name and means "spirits of the West". They first appeared in the Ramesside period of the New Kingdom, with a few mentions slightly earlier in the Coffin Texts and the Book of the Dead. In the Book of the Day and the Night, the Western Spirits tow the solar barque through Nut's body. The Museo Egizio papyrus catalogue calls the image of the "Westerners bA-souls" (bA.w imn.tyw) as jackals hauling the solar barque very familiar, above all in the texts called the Book of the Day and the Book of the Night. On one funerary papyrus, four jackals haul the barque across the watery heaven vault on a snake-headed hawser; their task is to guard the Sun-god and drive off his enemies in the last stages of his journey.
