The kallikantzaros is a malevolent creature in modern Greek folklore. Belief holds that they dwell underground, where they spend most of their time trying to cut down the huge tree that holds up the earth, yet they emerge during the twelve days of Christmas, 25 December to 6 January. Counterparts are also found in Bulgarian tradition. An old study of Greek folklore adds that for the rest of the year they stay in the lower world, working to gnaw through or cut down the great tree (or one or more columns) on which the world rests. Each Christmas the task is nearly done when the time comes for them to go to the upper world, and during their twelve days away the supports of the world are made whole again. The study describes them with black faces, glaring red eyes, the ears of goats or asses, and blood-red tongues lolling from huge mouths flanked by ferocious tusks. They are often lame but swift of foot and terrible in strength. It also distinguishes a larger sort, whose mischief is sometimes malicious and even deadly, from a smaller sort, which is more frolicsome and harmless. From dawn until sunset they hide in dark and dank places, in caves or beneath mills, and eat worms, snakes, frogs, tortoises and other unclean things. They swarm into homes by chimney and door, overturn and break the furniture, devour the Christmas pork, and befoul the water, wine and food that remain. According to the study they vanish when the third cock crows, the black one, which scares demons away better than the white and red cocks that crow before it. Its author explains the oddity of the regional accounts by stating that they are identical with the ancient Centaurs.
