La Bolefuego or La Candileja is a legendary character of Colombian and Venezuelan folklore. She appears as a flashing lantern that spins and shakes violently on the dark nights of Los Llanos. She is said to be the spirit of a woman burned alive in her home along with her two children, and she attacks travelers. Unlike other evil entities, she is attracted by prayers. A folklore book on Portuguesa state in Venezuela records many beliefs about her origin, among them the soul in torment of a sinful bishop, a son who cursed his mother, two comadres who quarreled on Holy Thursday, the wandering Jew, the tyrant Aguirre, or the spirit of a loving couple who made love during Holy Week. According to the book, she is not tied to one zone but roams the whole state and every corner of the Venezuelan plains. The testimonies quoted in the book describe a figure like a person burning inside with open arms as if begging for mercy; when the women cursed it, it moved away. An uncle calls it lost souls and forbids prayer because the more one prays the more it clings. Yet another witness says the ball gave off no heat and lit the road, and one witness was not afraid because his parents never said it did harm. One witness also rejects the scientists' explanation of accumulated gases.
