The Mâchecroute is a legendary dragon living in the Rhône at Lyon, near today's Guillotière bridge. It was said to cause floods and droughts and to devour people and animals. At the Mardi Gras carnival its puppet was paraded and thrown into the Rhône; Rabelais describes it with huge eyes, a giant head and toothy jaws. The legend arose in the Middle Ages, was mentioned by Rabelais in 1552 and faded after the Rhône was embanked in 1856. In Isère and Savoie it was also a child-eating bogeyman. Annie Cazenave sees it as a variation on the Christian dragon theme, and Jacques Béthemont compares it with the Tarasque. The Entre Rhône et Saône festival chose it as its mascot in 2022. In the English translation of Rabelais, the Gastrolaters parade a crudely carved, shoddily painted wooden statue that at Lyons during the Carnival is called Maschecroute or Gnawcrust. It is a hideous figure fit to frighten little children: its eyes are bigger than its belly and its head larger than the rest of its body. Its jaws are made to clash and rattle dreadfully, as is done at Metz with St. Clement's dragon.
