Monopods were mythological dwarf-like creatures with one large foot extending from a leg centred in the middle of the body. One source describes the Skiapodes (Sciapods) as a tribe of men from Ethiopia or India, each with one leg and a giant foot, who lifted the big foot overhead as shade from the hot southern sun. They appear in Aristophanes' play The Birds, first performed in 414 BC, and are described by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History from travelers' stories about India. In the quoted passage they are called Monocoli (One-Legged), who move in jumps with surprising speed, and are also called Sciapodes (Shadow-Foots) because in the hotter weather they lie on their backs and protect themselves with the shadow of their feet. Sources differ about their existence. In one quoted passage a speaker states that the Skiapodes do not live anywhere on the earth, least of all in India; another passage lists the Skiapodes among the tribes of Aithiopia (Ethiopia). Medieval bestiaries and map illustrations of Terra Incognita also featured them widely.
