Shippeitarō (しっぺい太郎 or 竹篦太郎; "Schippeitaro" in the German spelling) is a dog that helps the hero of a Japanese fairy tale bearing the same title. A young warrior overhears spirits hinting that what could bring them down is "Shippeitaro", which proves to be a dog. The dog is placed in the sacrificial container in place of the maiden, and when the spirits arrive, the warrior and dog attack and vanquish the cats. In the Violet Fairy Book, the villagers say Schippeitaro is the dog of their prince's overseer; the cats dance in a forest chapel, and the Spirit of the Mountain is a huge black cat that the dog bites and the youth beheads. The evil spirits appear as monkeys in most versions, as in Keigo Seki's anthology, but as cats in James's version and the Violet Fairy Book. Folklorists class the tale under the "Destroying the Monkey Demon" (Sarugami taiji) type. At the end of the Violet Fairy Book version the mountain girls are safe and a yearly feast is held in memory of the youth and his dog.
