White Tiger belongs to the Four Symbols of Chinese constellations. The White Tiger corresponds to west and autumn. Its names in neighboring traditions include Japanese Byakko and Korean Baekho. The White Tiger's constellation region contains seven lunar mansions. The Huainanzi chapter Tianwen xun associates the west with metal and names the White Tiger as the beast of that direction, while the Liji chapter Quli shang places it on the right with the Azure Dragon on the left. In Werner's account, the Blue Dragon and White Tiger discharge in Taoist temples the functions that Heng and Ha discharge at Buddhist temple gates. Werner also tells of Yin Ch'eng-hsiu, who died trying to avenge his father and was later canonized as the Spirit of the White Tiger Star.
