The Caboclo de Agua is a mythological being of northeastern Brazil that lives at the bottom of the São Francisco River and frightens fishermen.

The Caboclo de Agua is said to live in a golden grotto at the bottom of the São Francisco River, frightening fishermen and boatmen. It is described as a muscular giant with bronze skin and a single huge eye, with a bullet-proof heart, able to appear as a horse. It empties the nets of fishermen it dislikes and fills those of men it likes, and often capsizes boats. Fishermen mount "carrancas" figures on their bows and paint a star on the boat bottom to ward it off. In his folklore dictionary, Cascudo describes the Caboclo-d'Água as a fantastic creature of the São Francisco River with dominion over the waters and the fish. It favours its friends but pursues the fishermen it dislikes, overturning canoes. Its other names include Bicho-d'água, Rolão, Romão and Romãozinho. Cascudo quotes two different descriptions: a monstrous body with the proportions of an enormous giant, and the type most often reported, short, thick, muscular, copper-coloured, quick and ill-tempered. The boatmen of the São Francisco offer it tobacco, and a traveller who sticks a knife in the bottom of his canoe is said not to be attacked.
