The Caquesseitão is a creature in Fernão Mendes Pinto's Peregrinação, which the author insists is a real animal of Sumatra. It is the size of a large duck, black, scaled and spined along the back, with bat wings, a snake's neck, a spur on its forehead and a long green-and-black tail. It flies in leaps and hunts monkeys in the treetops. The creature became a frequent motif in Indo-Portuguese art. A museum notes that the Caquesseitão, an animal of fantastic nature described by Fernão Mendes Pinto, entered the exotic imagination of its time because it combined characteristics of different species. An aquamanile called Caquesseitão dates back to the 17th century and would have been manufactured in South China or Southeast Asia. In the original text of the Peregrinação, the natives of the land are said to call this beast Caquesseitão.
