The homem do chapéu de ferro is an evil being of Algarve legend. He appears at midnight when the cock crows, by roadsides, under olive and fig trees or near springs, accompanied by a black pig, a great stag or a black cock, all of them the Devil in different forms. He is colossal and bronze-coloured, wears a huge iron hat, and his mouth spits flames when he is angry. He can defy storms and stop lightning, and attacks, robs and kills the men he hates. Yet he flees on seeing the old woman of the white mare. The tradition was recorded in a yearbook of folk traditions as an Algarve belief, with the assurance that it reproduces exactly what the local people say and believe. Among the various evil entities, the homem do chapéu de ferro is called the most terrible; he spits flames when enraged and is the colour of bronze. He is said to have been one of the soldiers who scourged, and to have been punished for it by the Eternal Father.
