The Headless Nun is a ghost tale tied to French Fort Cove at Nordin, now the City of Miramichi in New Brunswick. By a story reaching back to the mid-1700s, she was a resident of the area in the 18th century called Sister Marie Inconnue (Inconnue is French for "unknown") and was later decapitated. The details differ. One version has a "mad trapper" severing her head and fleeing into the woods with it; another has two sailors decapitating her when she would not reveal where a treasure lay. In a tour guide's telling, around 1758, on her way home from helping a childbirth, she was attacked on the footbridge over Crow Brook; the attackers are called leprous sailors from L'Indienne de Morlaix or a mad trapper seeking the location of buried treasure, but Sister Marie refused and only prayed. In the guide's telling, the head was thrown into the waters of the cove and the body left on the bridge; the body was sent to France for burial but the head was never recovered. The story holds that Sister Marie's head was never found, so her spirit forever roams the area searching for it, and some say she still guards the treasure. Today "Headless Nun" tours are among the tourist attractions at French Fort Cove: a one-hour guided tour after dark in which costumed guides recite the tale, and the tour was featured on the television show Creepy Canada.
