The Mugwump, also known as Old Tessie or the Monster of Lake Temiscamingue, is a lake monster said to live in Lake Timiskaming, on the border of the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The lake is said to be home to a creature with a horse's head and a serpent's body. Its name comes from an Algonquin word of unclear meaning; in 1979 New Liskeard mayor Jack Dent reported that it meant "fearless sturgeon". According to Dent's informant, the mugwump was as long as four Indigenous warriors, probably over 20 feet. Dent's piece in the North Bay Nugget on 20 April 1979 is the first written documentation of the creature. Belief in a supernatural being in the lake is older. On an 1879 canoe voyage, the voyageur Sha-Ka-Nash recorded his Anishinaabe guides offering tobacco at places such as Devil's Rock to an otherworldly creature living in the lake, an offering thought advisable to court the water sprite's favour. The most common modern explanation is that the Mugwump is a large sturgeon.
