Huitzilopochtli ranks among the foremost deities of the Aztec pantheon, and the Méxica held him to be the highest god. He is the god of sun and war, protector of Tenochtitlán, linked with gold, warriors and rulers. His weapon was Xiuhcoatl, the fire serpent, which ties him to fire as well. Another source adds that he was of little importance to the Nahuas until Tlacaelel reformed Aztec religion and raised him to the level of Quetzalcoatl, Tlaloc and Tezcatlipoca. In a famous story, Huitzilopochtli avenged the murder of his mother Coatlícue by defeating his siblings on Mt. Coatepec. He sprang from her corpse with all his weapons and beheaded Coyolxauhqui, whose head then became the moon. For the Aztecs this struggle recurred every day and explained the daily exchange of the sky between sun and moon. The Méxica believed Huitzilopochtli led them from Aztlán to Tenochtitlán. In that capital he had a wooden statue and shrine atop the Temple Mayor pyramid, alongside that of Tláloc. Because he was so important, he received human sacrifices whose blood was believed to strengthen the god. In the month of Toxcatl, a dough effigy of amaranth dressed as him was paraded to his temple and eaten. In art he may be shown carrying a snake-shaped spear-thrower representing Xiuhcóatl, and he is symbolised by a hummingbird or an eagle on a prickly pear cactus.
