Mixtecatl is one of the six giant sons of Iztac-Mixcoatl and Tlaltecuhtli who populated the Earth after the Great Flood. The fifth son, he founded Mixtlan, origin of the people of the Mixteca region. A Nahoa cosmogony poem in blank verse, with footnotes, names a being who takes the name Ilancuéye. The "serpent of white cloud" is joined with her, and six tlacámes (men) are engendered as brothers who become the source of many races. In the poem the valiant Mixtécatl guards himself from Mixtecápan in the barren hills, a place today called simply Mixteca. According to a footnote, the name Iztamixcóhuatl is composed of iztac (white), mixtli (cloud) and cohuatl (serpent). Another footnote says the Indians believed the earth was first inhabited by giants, whom that note calls quinametzin. Sources differ on the giants' mother: one names Tlaltecuhtli or Ilancueitl, while the poem uses Ilancuéye and its note says Orozco y Berra, following Torquemada, erred in using Ilancueitl.
