Inti is the ancient Inca sun god, held up as patron of the Inca state. Most people regard him as the sun god, yet he is better seen as a cluster of solar aspects, since the Inca split his identity along the stages of the sun into three sub-complexes: father, son and brother. He was thought all-powerful and generous, yet able to show anger through solar eclipses. The most common belief was that Inti was born of Viracocha, though another source says Viracocha made the sun from an island on Lake Titicaca. Inti is also called the brother of Quilla, goddess of the moon, and by another source her husband. Inca rulers saw themselves as his direct descendants and the Inca ruler was regarded as his living representative, while Manco Capac was believed to have been taught by him or even to be his son. The Coricancha temple at Cuzco was dedicated to Inti, and he was worshipped above all at the Inti Raymi festival. Pachacuti is often linked with the origin and spread of the Inca Sun Cult. White llamas were among the commonest offerings. In art he was seldom portrayed; when he was, the form was a gold statue, a sun disk or a golden mask, and one statue showed him as a small seated boy called Punchao.

Konteks budaya

The sun mattered to the Incas, especially highlanders, because crops such as maize depended on it, and its heat was also thought to bring rain.
