In Catalan mythology Nonell de la neu is a kind of snow giant. Once a handsome youth with a thick beard and long blond hair, he became a great white dog the size of a horse. He appears soon after the first snowfall, since he carries the snow from place to place. He is considered peaceful: flocks sleep easily when he comes near, knowing Nonell protects them. The figure is related to the Basque Basajaun and resembles the Yeti; Joan Amades recorded a version of the legend at La Pobla de Lillet. The magazine El Temps also places the Nonell among the giants in its list of local mythological figures, together with the Puigmal and the Caramançó.
