Mama Qucha, also written Mama Cocha ('Mother Sea', 'Mother Lake', or simply 'sea'), is an ancient Inca goddess who watches over the sea and its fish and guards sailors and fishermen. She is the wife of Wiraqucha and mother of Inti and Mama Killa, and was commonly worshipped to quiet rough seas and bring good fishing. She was considered one of the four Elemental Mothers, with Pachamama, Mama Nina, and Mama Wayra. Together with Mama Quilla (the Moon) and Pachamama she formed what is called the Incan lunar trinity. In some regions of the empire she was believed to be the goddess of all bodies of water, and she was more important to coastal peoples because of their nearness and dependence on the sea. She also represented all that was feminine, gave balance to the world, was often identified with rainwater that fertilizes the earth, and inhabited the Hanan Pacha, the 'world above'. According to the second source, the ancient Peruvians worshipped the sea and the earth: inland folk regarded the sea as a menacing deity, while coastal people revered it as a benevolent god and called it Mama-cocha because it yielded them fish. They also worshipped the whale and the most abundant fish species of each district. Another ancient Inca legend makes Mama Qucha the daughter of the Sun and the Moon and sister of 'Inca', a pale and beautiful young woman.
