The Millalobo is an important being in Chilote mythology; his name comes from Mapudungun milla ("gold") and Spanish lobo, alluding to the sea lion. Memoria Chilena lists him, with the Pincoya, among the sea divinities of that mythology. He is pictured as Triton-like, with a sea lion's lower body, a human upper body and a face that mixes both. Quintana Mansilla describes him as a strange being the size of a large seal, with a face resembling both a man's and a fish's, a human-looking chest and the rest of the body in sea-lion form. He is covered in short, shiny, gold-yellow fur, hence his name. He is said to be unable to talk and to communicate only through a sea-lion-like bleat that people can understand. In one version he was born when a woman mated with the sea lion that rescued her from drowning, during the legendary clash between Tenten Vilu and Caicai Vilu. Quintana Mansilla writes that he was conceived by a beautiful woman in love with a sea lion and invested by Coicoi-vilu as absolute owner of the seas; another version says he was chosen by Caicai as his representative to govern all that lived in the sea. The Millalobo lives at the bottom of the sea with his wife Huenchula, daughter of an old sorceress called la Huenchur. Their children are the Pincoya, the Pincoy and La Sirena, who help him manage the seas. He delegates tasks to subordinates, from seeding fish and shellfish to directing the tides and controlling calms and storms, and evil as well as benevolent sea creatures are said to pay him respect. He is called the creator of the ghost ship Caleuche, and Quintana Mansilla equates him with Neptune or Poseidon.
