In Portuguese fairy tales the olharapo belongs to a race of giants with one great eye on the forehead, like a cyclops. According to Alexandre Parafita, it appears especially in the tales and legends of Trás-os-Montes as a violent, fierce man-eating giant. Folk tradition also knows the olharapa and the olhapim, and Vinhais has a proverb: "In the land of the olhapins, he who has two eyes is king." Francisco Martins Sarmento's collection Antígua, Tradições e Contos Populares contains a tale from Souto that calls the olharapos a people that still exists. A man who stumbles into their house learns from a child that the parents will come home and eat him; he escapes and hides up a pine tree while the olharapo and his wife search for him with torches in vain. The narrator, Jerónimo, did not know that olharapos have a single eye.
