Ulmecatl is one of the six giant sons of Mixcoatl and Tlaltecuhtli who populated the Earth after the Great Flood. The third son, he founded Cuetlachoapan, where Puebla now stands. In the Nahoa cosmogony poem with its footnotes, the six brothers are born of the union of the "ferocious serpent of white cloud" with his mate, and they dwell on the earth and become the source of many races. The poem names Ulmécatl as one of them, alongside Xélhua the firstborn, Tenoch, Xicaláncatl, Mixtécatl and Otómitl. A footnote in the book says Cuetlaxcoapan was the place where the city of Puebla stands today, and that Ulmécatl founded other places besides it. Another footnote explains the Indian belief that the earth was first inhabited by giants called quinametzin, with large fossilized bones as their remains.
